In many cities, urban density and housing costs are the two main global problems. The consequence is an incremental amount of smaller living units as in the micro housing with little social value as a side effect. However, Songpa Micro Housing challenges the coexistence of dense micro housing with quality shared spaces.
It is a provisional housing type with ‘14 unit blocks’ that allow residents to occupy private spaces but still considering about the public and social value. This new typology extends the limits of the housing unit to include semi-public circulation, balconies, and program on the thickness of the walls. This is the ‘tapioca space’, a metaphor for a soft intersection between public and private space that leads to build social fabrics between temporary neighbors.
People do not live here permanently, but it’s multiple common spaces implement the exchange of experiences between the diverse types of inhabitants: environmental activist, pet lover, networker, film critic, or even a loner.
